Kicking off 23rd Master Musicians Festival with a little strategy

We’ve had the great fortune at KSD to maintain relationships with several of our clients that span decades.

Such is the case with the Master Musicians Festival. KSD has been involved with Somerset’s premier summer music event in some way since its inception 23 years ago. Whether developing MMF’s website, designing posters or brochures, writing press releases, fitting the stage with banners or sitting in our lawn chairs in July to take in the awesome festival atmosphere right here in our hometown, KSD is dedicated to supporting MMF and its mission of bringing musical excellence to rural Kentucky.

So naturally, when MMF President Tiffany Bourne proposed having a strategic planning session in January to continue fostering the festival’s growth, we were all in.

At the session, led by Elizabeth Cawein, CEO and founder of Signal Flow Public Relations in Memphis, KSD team members and MMF board members brainstormed ways to increase the festival’s media exposure. Elizabeth works with musicians and music organizations at Signal Flow, conducting media training sessions, developing web strategies and helping plan album releases and major events. With her guidance, our group spent the day analyzing the festival’s strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats, while also learning how to more effectively use social media to increase awareness.

“It’s rare that I meet a board or team from an organization as passionate and engaged as the MMF board,” Elizabeth said. “That made this a very easy and fun session for me to lead – these folks genuinely want to build on their successes as a festival and reach more people and they’re proud of the work they’ve done, and that means they’re incredibly receptive to constructive criticism and new ideas. I can’t wait to watch the story of MMF unfold over the next few months leading up to this year’s festival.”

At the end of the day, we left the table with a plan for expanding music industry media coverage and a list of measurable objectives to increase awareness about MMF through social media and public relations efforts.

“This session was helpful for all of us in that we were able to refocus, set some tangible goals and envision where we want this festival to be in the future,” Tiffany said. “Everyone involved with MMF has such passion and dedication. I’m excited to put that to work in ways that will spread the word about how wonderful our festival truly is.”
